I want to address a belief that a lot of women have about surfing, and that is that you need to really strong and super-fit to learn to surf.   Let me assure you, that this is not the case, rather the key to surfing fitness is core strength and flexibility. So in this video, I will demonstrate our pre-surf warm up, some key stretches and I’ll let you know our long-term fitness routine.  To get started with your pre-surf warm up, go for a light jog to get your blood flowing. This is very important if you are surfing in a cold water.  After your jog, stretch out your major muscle groups, being your quadriceps, hamstrings, lower back, shoulders, arms and neck.  Next, focus your mind by practicing your pop up technique, 5 times on the sand before you hit the waves. In total your routine may take 10 minutes and can be difference between surfing success and frustration.  Now, no matter how well you warm up and stretch, if you haven’t surfed before, you can expect your muscles to fatigue quickly during the learning phase. This is normal, so don’t be discouraged.  For a great long term fitness routine, I recommend practicing yoga. A lot of the poses target similar muscles to those you need for surfing, so it is a great way to keep your muscles flexible and your core strong. This will help you to stay in the water longer, and really make surfing more enjoyable.
