'Battle Ropes Benefit #1 - Contralateral Movement or Cross-patterning for Whole Brain Connection Whether you are crawling, walking, running, or alternating waves on a battle rope, it is a contralateral movement. Contralateral movements or cross-patterning are not only a great way to condition the body, it is doing incredible things for our minds! Because we are using both sides of the body in an alternating sequence, it allows for the right hemisphere and left hemisphere to communicate through the corpus collosum. Improving our hemispheric communication through the middle of our brain, allows for better thinking. Instead of being over-linear and analytical (left brained) or overly creative and emotional (right-brained), we will think with both sides, giving you a more whole-brained thought process. The same is true with the upper-cognitive regions of the brain, communicating better with the lower-limbic regions of our brain. The lower limbic regions of the brain, often called the lizard brain, are controlling most of the autonomic functions of the body (heart rate, digestion, etc.), and it becomes connected and in communication with the upper cognitive portions of the brain, while you are thinking about and adjusting autonomically and deliberately when performing any conscious moving, to include ropes. There is a whole brain connection happening psychologically, because of your alternating wave patterning done with the battle ropes physiologically. Yes, I am a nerd, and I love this stuff!
